To help Haitians anywhere invest energy and resources in efficient Konbit activities that bring better quality of life for Haitians everywhere.

KONBIT

HAITIAN

This powerful Kreyol word is rooted in an African tradition of collective farming work which remains vibrant within most Haitian rural communities.

This letter and Money Order were received by AKASAN at the end of 2010. It came from a young Montreal-based member who lost her mother in a tragic accident this year. Exemplifying the courage and resilience Haitians are known for, Vladymir decided to comfront death in a most dramatic and beautiful manner. Her work colleagues collected funds to donate in her mother's name, for the education of a child in Haiti. Deciding that she wants to help many children, she told them about the self-empowering Haitian-led organization of which she is member and decided to donate the $255 to that organization.

Much more than financial resources, we, Haitians, are in dire and urgent need of reasons to, once again, believe in the women and men of our nation, in our own ability to transform tears into joy, death into life, deserts into lakes, illiteracy into geniuses....as our noble ancestors to whom it was offered death and enslavement but who found a way to create in the Americas an oasis of life and freedom.

Inspired by the Haitian proverb:

"4 je kontre manti kaba"

(when four eyes meet there is no space for deceit)

AKASAN makes use of audio, video, multimedia support to help everyone bear witness, verify and be inspired by incremental progress accomplished by Haitian-led, Haitian capacity building initiatives that focus on improving the quality of life of Haitians in Haiti and elsewhere.

Il y a des douleurs que seule une mère puisse connaitre. Il y a courage que seule une femme puisse inspirer. Il a resurrection que seule une Haitienne puisse réaliser.
